History

Bishop Abraham Memorial College started its dedicated service to the cause of higher education on 28th June 1965. The College is named after Bishop Abraham Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the saintly soul who dedicated his life for spreading the values of the Kingdom of God.

The college was founded by Late Rev. Dr. T. C. George a selfless true follower of Jesus Christ in memory of his Uncle and Mentor Bishop Abraham Marthoma Metropolitan. He along with six other visionaries belonging to multiple Christian Denominations formed a group called Bishop Abraham Memorial Trust. This entity was registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act on April 28, 1965 as Bishop Abraham Memorial Trust Association who is the owner and Educational Agency of this college.

During the years of service, the college has opened and continues to open new vistas of knowledge in our efforts to empower the rural youth through education. We celebrated our silver jubilee in 1990, the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Shivaraj Patil was the chief guest in the valedictory function.

Golden Jubilee was celebrated in 2015. Chief Minister Mr. Ommen Chandy inaugurated the jubilee celebrations. As part of the jubilee celebrations, college organized Academic Seminars, Outreach Programmes and a National Science Exhibition. An auditorium large enough to accommodate the entire students and faculty was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee.

The college offers one Ph. D. Programme, four Postgraduate Programmes and eight Undergraduate Programmes.

Rev. Dr. T. C. George, the founder of the college was born on 7th March 1916 at Karikkattu Mattathu in Eraviperoor. He had his early schooling at Thiruvalla. After schooling, he did his B. A. Degree in Economics at U. C. College Alwaye. In 1939, he joined the Serampore College of theological studies and did his B. D. degree and later continued his theological studies at Wycliff College, Toronto, Canada.

He was ordained as a deacon by his Uncle Abraham Marthoma Metropolitan in February 1944. He was elected as the Secretary of the Mar Thoma Voluntary Evangelical Association and served that office for a long term of 15 years. Later he was appointed as the Principal of the Mar Thoma Memorial Bible Institute. He was one of the founding fathers of the St. Thomas Evangelical Church of India.

Another significant contribution of this luminary was to the cause of higher education. Enlightened by the inner sense of social service and strengthened by God, he started Bishop Abraham Memorial College in 1965, in the name of his Uncle, Dr. Abraham Mar Thoma Metropolitan. He served and guided this center of higher learning as the Founder-Manager from 1965 to 1999. He was called to eternal rest on 3rd March 1999.
